Why Surfing in Dubai Can Be Difficult?
Surfing in dubai is a very challenging hobby for its lovers, as they face many issues that do not exist in other regions. The surf season is very short and only reaches its peaks from December till March. Even during its peak the waves are inconsistent and surf waves are very small for surfers, and what is considered “good surfing conditions” in Dubai would be labelled poor in other places like Bali.
Why, Deira Island?
When people think about surfing in Dubai, Sunset Beach is the first thing that comes to mind, but what if Dubai can have another exciting surfing place that has much bigger and consistent waves? Deira Island can be a very exciting place for surfers and tourists who are looking for a surfing experience. Finding a surf spot is very hard challenging and surfers in dubai end up going to places far away like Tims Reef in Fujeirah.
Deira Island is an ideal surf spot which eliminates most problems surfers may face in the UAE. Its location is not far and also isolated which is what surfers search for. We found this Island while fishing and thought it would be perfect for surfing. We brought our surfboards and we were surprised by the experience.
It is located 30 minutes by boat from Jumeirah port. The island has clearer water, bigger and more consistent waves than any place in the UAE. This makes it suitable for beginners and experienced surfers in the UAE
What we saw when we visited?
We came across this island by coincidence on a fishing trip we had, and saw great potential for it to be a surf spot. We usually go to places like Surf House in Sunset Beach and rent boards. The issue with sunset beach was the small waves, and overly crowded surfing section, where only a quarter of the beach is suitable by nets for surfers. The rest is for casual people going for a swim.
What makes Deira Island a potential surfing paradise?
Along with its natural beauty, the island could accommodate recreational infrastructure that would meet the needs of the surfing community in the UAE. Imagine a premium surf school in Dubai on the island that offers pro-level guidance from certified instructors. Also, a kids’ surf school option will be available to make sure that children get proper training and stay safe in the water. Those who are new to the sport could improve their technique, while more experienced surfers can test their surf skills. The island could also feature amenities related to the sport, such as the Single Fin Cafe and Surf House Dubai. This will allow surfers to enjoy a refreshing coffee after a morning surf session and get to know fellow surfers, strengthening the local beach community. This Island could become a project of a surf island that could include a resort, surf schools, surfboard rentals and many other things. It just needs some polishing for the beach, and a few safety nets to avoid fish from entering.
Could Deira Island attract tourists to surf in Dubai?
Dubai already attracts millions of visitors, so Deira Island isn’t only for local surfers. A beginner-friendly surf spot 30 minutes away from Jumariah can stand out. And more visitors would mean more demand for coaches, rental, and facilities, the things surfers in the UAE say are missing today. A tourism-friendly surf beach can raise awareness of the sport and increase the numbers of the surf community in Dubai.
How does Deira Island compare to other UAE surf spots?
When looking for popular places, local surfers always search for historical spots or consistent swells. More experienced surfers can often reference historic local breaks at Tim’s Reef or go south to surf in Abu Dhabi to catch seasonal swells or pools. This won’t be a hassle anymore because Deira Island offers a combination of the previous surf spots with accessible, high-quality waves, including the quiet and relaxing offshore environment that is minutes away from the Dubai mainland. Whether you are a novice looking to learn surfing, hone your skills, or just looking for an exclusive beach getaway, Deira Island has everything it takes to become a landmark for watersports and recreation in the UAE. Also the beach is bigger than usual surf spots like Sunset Beach.
